Mercedes-Benz in 1972 introduced the the 350SL convertible and 350SLC coupe. The “350″ designation to the model was not reflecting 4.5-liter V8 under hood for the U.S. production byt rather the 3.5-liter V8 created for European models. Mercedes-Benz’s desire to maintain the same name in all continents. The second-generation of SLs, shared eventually the same 6-cylinder engines in both European and America. The 350SL were sold in Europe through 1980 with 4-speed stick shifts, or 3-speed automatics.
Similar to the way Mercedes-Benz engines had been laid out for some time, the V8 engine was fuel-injected and of overhead camshaft design. The suspension were all-independent ensuring nimble handling, and 4-wheel disc brakes guaranteed enthusiastic braking would not meet with disappointment. 4- and 5-speed manuals were offered in Europe but no such transmissions were ever fitted to U.S. 107s.
